Mr. Royce Thomas, Assistant Superintendent for Student Support Services

Valdosta City Schools is proud to announce the promotion of Mr. Royce Thomas to the position of Assistant Superintendent for Student Support Services, effective July 2025. With a career in education that spans over two decades, Mr. Thomas has served students at every level—elementary, middle, and high school—demonstrating an unwavering commitment to student growth, safety, and success.

Mr. Thomas most recently served as Principal of J.L. Newbern Middle School, where he led with integrity, compassion, and a strong focus on instructional excellence. Prior to his leadership at Newbern, he served as Principal of Pinevale Elementary School and as Assistant Principal at Valdosta High School, Newbern Middle School, and Horne Learning Center. His experience in each educational tier equips him with a unique perspective to lead and advocate for the well-being of all students across the district.

“Working to make a difference, one day at a time,” is more than a philosophy for Mr. Thomas—it’s the foundation of his leadership. He believes in the power of consistency, collaboration, and care to positively impact the lives of students and families throughout Valdosta City Schools.

“Having had the opportunity to serve at every level of our system, I’ve seen firsthand the power of support and opportunity in shaping a child’s future,” said Thomas. “As Assistant Superintendent for Student Support Services, I am honored to continue that work on a districtwide scale—helping ensure that every student, from kindergarten to high school graduation, has what they need to thrive.”

Superintendent Dr. Craig Lockhart praised Thomas’s leadership and vision: “Mr. Thomas has been a cornerstone of Valdosta City Schools for many years. His ability to lead with compassion, understand the needs of students at every stage, and build positive school cultures makes him the ideal choice to oversee our student support services.”

Mr. Thomas holds an Ed.S. in Curriculum, Instruction, Management, and Administration, and a Master’s in Educational Leadership from Nova Southeastern University. He also earned a B.S. in Middle Grades Education from Valdosta State University.
