On Thursday February 2, students from the Maceo A. Horne Learning Center attended Geekfest at Wiregrass Technical College. There, they were given the opportunity to explore various dual enrollment offerings presented by the school. Students delighted in participating in the numerous exploratory activities the college had to offer. With such names as Bone Bingo (radiology demonstration), Money, Money, Money (financial aid discussion workshop), and Pin the Band-Aid on the Boo Boo (phlebotomy demonstration, students were given a fun take on future educational opportunities available to them.
The excursion allowed students to momentarily step out of the classroom and into the world of possible future endeavors. Senior, Khaliel Green marveled at the interactive nature of the activities—discussing how he liked how “hands on” the barbering and culinary classes were. Fellow senior Semaj Thomas also enjoyed the barbering class—explaining that it was the class he liked most, as it was interesting and something he felt he “would have fun doing”. In “ID Karla Organs, Staple Wounds, & Ring the Kick-Bucket”, students were given the chance to participate in an animal dissection exercise using state of the art equipment. The driving simulator enabled students to become comfortable behind the wheel while allowing them to show off their driving expertise. Senior, A’Jay Brown plans to work in the information technology and telecommunications arena when he joins the military after graduation. He discussed how participating in the “Hack Attack” and “Geek Security” workshops increased his appreciation of his chosen career fields.
