Reading

The Middle Grades student-body at the Horne Learning Center (HLC), are “elevating” their reading skills this year. As an avid reader from childhood, I understand the importance of students developing sound reading/writing skills at an early age. Research proves “children who are behind their peers in reading struggle with low self-esteem and feelings of inadequacy.  Low achievement in reading is also the common denominator in school discipline, attendance and dropout problems, and juvenile crime (The Children’s Reading Foundation, 2023).” Therefore, HLC been tasked with, providing student instruction using the Reading horizons and Elevate Curriculum. The purpose of the curriculum is  “to help students identify and apply the predictable patterns that govern the English language to reading tasks.  With this system, students develop automatic word recognition and spelling skills while simultaneously building fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
