Leader in Me

Valdosta City Schools is taking a transformative step forward by implementing the Leader In Me model across the district. This evidence-based approach transforms schools by equipping students, staff, and leaders with essential leadership and life skills to thrive in a rapid and ever-changing world.

What Is Leader in Me?

Rooted in Dr. Stephen Covey’s The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Leader in Me fosters a culture where every student is encouraged to lead, regardless of academic performance or background. It integrates leadership principles into all school activities, aiming to develop character, responsibility, and independence while enhancing academic achievement.

Leader in Me is more than a curriculum; it’s a framework embedded in every aspect of school life. It promotes initiative, goal-setting, and collaboration through the 4 Disciplines of Execution (4DX), aligning with Valdosta City Schools' mission to create a supportive environment for student success.

Why Leader in Me?

Valdosta City Schools chose Leader in Me to equip students with crucial leadership and life skills for success beyond the classroom. The program fosters personal accountability and continuous improvement.

Dr. Craig Lockhart, superintendent, said, "Leader in Me ensures every student feels empowered and takes ownership of their learning, preparing them academically, socially, and emotionally to become proactive leaders."

The Implementation Plan

The district is developing clear goals for implementing Leader in Me, focusing on integrating it into the School Improvement Plan (SIP) and increasing SIP understanding from 70% to 100% by May 2025. Professional development has started, with ongoing support from Leader in Me coach Ms. Barbara Lindtner.

Impact on Students and the Community

Leader in Me encourages a mindset shift for students, educators, and the community. It teaches initiative, goal-setting, and collaboration, while promoting responsibility and ownership of learning. This initiative is expected to strengthen the student body and positively impact the broader Valdosta community.

Looking Ahead

As Valdosta City Schools implements Leader in Me, the district aims to foster growth, leadership, and academic excellence. By focusing on the whole child, Valdosta City Schools is committed to providing students with the tools to excel both in school and in life, marking a significant step in enhancing the educational experience.
