The Georgia School Boards Association, Risk Management Services (RMS), recently announced the recipients of the 2023-2024 Safety Grants, demonstrating a commitment to supporting ongoing safety measures in local school systems. The grant recipients were announced during the GSBA-RMS Annual Meeting held in Athens, Ga., in October.
This year, a total grant sum of $60,000 was awarded after the GSBA RMS received over 50 applications. Valdosta City Schools Director of Safety and Security, Sabrina Smith, submitted a grant proposal aimed at acquiring slip-resistant shoes for the school's nutrition staff. The $4,120 grant award will contribute to mitigating slip hazards faced by food services workers. Citing a study by the Center for Disease Control (CDC), it was demonstrated that the use of 5-star rated slip-resistant shoes significantly reduced workers' compensation claims for slip injuries. Districts implementing these shoes reported 67% fewer slip injury claims compared to those that did not receive them.
The grant's impact on Valdosta City Schools' school nutrition employees goes beyond injury risk reduction. The allocation not only ensures a safer work environment but also amplifies staff morale. Within the past two years, two slip-related injuries were reported in the school's kitchens, emphasizing the relevance of this safety initiative. By equipping staff with slip-resistant shoes, the school emphasizes its commitment to their safety while they serve our most precious assets, our children.
The GSBA-RMS Safety Grant recipients exemplify a dedication to holistic safety practices, illustrating the collaboration between the GSBA, RMS, and local school systems to foster secure educational environments for students and staff.
